War is... Real

This photograph by Nick Ut shows nine year old, Phan Thi Kim Phuc, running naked after being burned by a napalm attack. In the picture, she is shown running towards the camera, naked because she has ripped off her burning clothes. This shows that war is real because innocent people, especially children, became victims of a war that they did not ask to be a part of.  This photo became a Pulitzer Prize winning picture and ran on the front page of almost every newspaper in the world. In an article in LA WEEKLY, it is said that Ut’s picture is “credited with swaying public opinion against the war” and “has proven to be not only the iconic photo of the Vietnam era but also one of the most haunting and memorable of the entire 20th century.” “It is a picture that doesn’t rest.” This picture so realistically depicts the horrors of war, that it was able to change people's opinions about the Vietnam War. This picture is real because it reflects
What was happening in Vietnam right in front of your eyes,
America’s involvement in the war, and the

Reaction of people around the world to put an end to the war.

  1. The image you used is very moving, and I think it is a good thing that the picture has gained publicity. More people need to realize how real war actually is, and what happens to innocent lives. Also, your artist statement nicely backs up your visual. “This shows that war is real because innocent people, especially children, became victims of a war that they did not ask to be a part of.” This line is very strong and is a great explanation of how innocent people are brought into a war that they want nothing to do with. Nice job!
