War is an industry. War makes money, that is a fact. War Profiteering is a term you will hear a lot, when talking about war as an industry, but what does it mean? War Profiteering is defined as; Any person or organization that profits from warfare or by selling weapons and other goods to parties at war. There are many companies profiting off war. For instance, according to USA today in 2012 BAE systems made 2.3 Billion in profit and Lockheed Martin made 2.7 Billion in profit. These companies are making money off war but does that make them evil. I would argue that it does not necessarily, automatically make them evil. It should not be forgotten that war has had its benefits too. WWII brought jobs to the market helping The United States come out of the depression. Although war was not the only factor it was a large contributor. Many great inventions and revolutions in science and medicine have come out wars. An example of one of these innovation is the Jeep Wrangler. These cars were produced because they were easy to assemble and cheap to make. Today Jeep Wrangles can be found everywhere. Another invention that can be contributed to war is Kleenex. Pressurized cabins for planes, plastics, heat lamps, wristwatches are all things that came out of war. Many of the companies that are profiting off war are the putting money into R&D and making these breakthroughs in medicine, aviation, and many other things. Although good thing has come out of war, people are still dying. So that begs a moral question is it ok to be able to profit of the sacrifices of others? Even if something good come out of it? When is it not worth it? The image above has the man drinking red, to represent blood. He is drinking the blood of the fallen soldiers he is exploiting to make money. The argument this is making is that war profiteering is bad, because of how it is fueled by death. This is true the war industry is fueled by death. There is two side to this argument, on one side many very good things have come from war. On the other people are dying and business are making huge profits. With the way technology is moving soon there may be a future where war is fought autonomously. This would eliminate the human factor and only leave R&D. The landscape of war is changing and it's impossible to see where it will go from here.
