A major part of war is placing humans in a new situation that they have ever experienced before. In these situations a person's true colors and nature are shown. Sometimes the soldier is cowardly and unwilling or unable to deal with the situation. Other times, like in the pictures, the soldier is capable of being heroic and handle whatever is thrown at them with bravery. Lastly some people begin to break down and their entire nature is changed. This is shown in The Things They Carried where Mary Anne changes from a civilized girl into an adrenaline junky and a dangerous person. In the pictures above we can see soldiers acting heroically doing action that they wouldn't have been capable of doing if they hadn't been to war. The photo on the left is iconic for depicting the bravery of soldiers. The photo on the right shows how a soldier has the will to fight and persevere even when wounded from fighting.
