War is a window into the future of technology. The military is the birthplace of many things Americans and people around the world couldn't live without today. The military originally developed and used many of our everyday items from duct tape and cargo pants to microwaves and computers. These things, although developed for battle or acquiring intelligence, have changed daily life for most people, and no matter what your opinion of the military one cannot say that they haven’t made huge contributions to our daily lives. My personal favorite contribution from the military is the Jeep. Jeeps were originally developed for rugged terrain reliability in the field. Originally designed by American Bantam Car Company as a lightweight reliable four wheel drive recon vehicle, in 1941 the American Army contracted Bantam to build the jeep was in debt and didn’t have the size to be able to produce the massive order the army has made. The majority the contract to produce the jeeps was given to Willys Overland and even some were built by Ford. Willys would later go on and produce jeeps after the war and the Jeep brand would live on to this day now owned by Fiat. Jeeps have been a part of car culture since WWII and has led the way for SUVs to become a part of every car producers’ line up. The jeep is my favorite example of a military machine that now has a place in history and the future. In the photo we can see the jeep driving directly through the forest with no issue. The little vehicle has full cargo of soldiers including a lieutenant general, a major general and a colonel. Nothing is stopping them from driving through that clearing, no rock or root sticking out of the ground. They aren’t stopped, just like our military in conflict, we never let our environment get in the way of our goals. The WWII jeep has defined a culture and is still a staple in american off roading and racing. Lets not forget its origin in our military
