Students in our American Studies class have been studying the history of America at war. Our study has included poems, short stories, a novel, letters from soldiers, films, primary and secondary source documents, and even a veteran speaking to our class about his incredible war experiences. To conclude our study, students were asked to complete the statement "War is..." and articulate their new and insightful understandings of the war experience. This is their work.

War is Gut-Wrenching
The word Gut-Wrenching means extremely unpleasant or upsetting. This picture represents and supports my thesis because a war medic is caring for a child who needs medical assistance. The child has blood on her shirt, and that shows that she is badly injured or hurt. She looks too young to comprehend where she is and what is happening around her. The war medic has his eyes closed and looks immensely upset and sorrowful. This child he is caring for could remind him of a son or daughter he may have at home. This picture also reminds me of the movie we watched in History class called, “The Last Frontier.” Charles Eastman came back to the tribe because he received a letter from his girlfriend saying that they needed medical attention at the reservation. He went to the reservation and saw many people hurt, sick and in need of medical attention. He couldn’t believe what was going on and how there were no one to help the sick and those in need of medical care. The movie showed many children who died from whooping cough, so Charles felt helpless, like the soldier holding the child.
