War is evidence of how dangerous ignorance can be. There is a saying that ignorance is bliss. If this is true, then what is bliss? Is bliss killing a faceless enemy because it is easier than facing the truth? The reality is that every person killed or injured has a name. That name also has a family and a home. With one pull of the trigger that was all taken away from them. Stripping down a person until they are nothing more than the “enemy” is dehumanizing. Ignorance is not bliss, in fact it is quite the opposite. It is the source of grief, the thoughts that can keep a person up at night. The image above shows a man who has been killed. To the outside world, it’s just a man lying in his blood. These people, however, are unaware of the fact that there is much more than blood being lost. A life was lost, and although it may look like only one man is hurt many more are affected. There is a family who is now incomplete. Ignorance took the life of this man and takes the lives of so many during war. If the man was not so dehumanized by the concept of enemy then maybe he would still be alive. Going into war, many soldiers and american citizens know very little about the country they are fighting against. Some don’t even understand the cause they are fighting for. This type of ignorance is what takes the lives of so many people. Innocent or not, every person has a name and every name has a story.
This was so insightful love it!!!
ReplyDeleteI love how you redefine what the meaning of bliss and ignorance are and the effect ignorance has on so many innocent people. Talking about the importance of each individual as it relates to war I find to be such an important thing that many do not do. I admire that you truly value the lives of every single individual that partakes in war and see their meaning as a person. You put such emphasis on the importance of life and how one lost is not just painful to that one person who has passed on, but to the people in their life that are directly affected. Taking such a cliche idea of ignorance is bliss and twisting it around to argue that it is not bliss, I find to be truly brilliant. This was so enjoyable to read and relate to and comforting in the sense that I know that other people value individual lives just as much as I do. I also love the visual the blood spilling out and spreading on to both parts of the image creates a great metaphor of how many innocent people truly pay the price because of their ignorance. Great job!
