Students in our American Studies class have been studying the history of America at war. Our study has included poems, short stories, a novel, letters from soldiers, films, primary and secondary source documents, and even a veteran speaking to our class about his incredible war experiences. To conclude our study, students were asked to complete the statement "War is..." and articulate their new and insightful understandings of the war experience. This is their work.

War is deep wound that can never be healed

Your War is statement is poetry. I think the image you found really does depict the idea that soldiers' minds are under an immense amount of scrutiny. I would try and avoid extreme words such as "all" when referring to soldiers, because not all soldiers are the same. For example, you said all soldiers experience PTSD which is not a true fact and an extreme. you said soldiers experience PTSD for certain reasons, I probably would have made a list of reasons, rather than just saying one reason, because it really illustrates your beliefs to the reader. Overall, this piece did have a few flaws, but the message was clear and strong.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your thesis statement. A soldiers experience of war can never be forgotten, only hidden in the mind. The image you chose very clearly depicts the stress that soldiers go through. After coming home from a war one is expected to make the switch right away. For most that is too fast. The war haunts people and stays with them forever. It would have been nice to read about an example of a soldier coming home from war. Overall I wish there was a little more detail, but the details you put in were very powerful. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI agree on your thesis statement. The way you made the reader feel for the soldiers and what they had to go through really intensifies my understanding of war. I think the way you narrowed the idea down to PTSD at a specific point really supports your thesis. I love the backbone you used to write this story by also saying the reasons why they do it
