War is anonymous. When you see a crowd of people, you can never tell who has fought in a war before and who hasn’t, you can’t tell what a person has seen and been through by how they act in public. The eyes are seen as an object that can be used to identify people. People cover up their eyes to be seen as anonymous. In both of these pictures, we see how this woman has her eyes covered up, representing how she can be anyone. Makeup is seen as a mask, a façade almost. The woman in this photo is trying to cover up what she might have experienced in the war, by putting makeup on she is covering up the imperfections of war. “By and large they carried these things inside, maintaining the mask of composure” (O’Brien 21) the word ‘mask’ connects to how the girl is putting on makeup (a mask). The word “composure” connects to how she’s smiling and has a steady hand. The “things inside” refer to the image of a girl blindfolded and held at gunpoint in the woman’s eye.

I love the use of make up in relation to masking traumatic memories of war.
