Students in our American Studies class have been studying the history of America at war. Our study has included poems, short stories, a novel, letters from soldiers, films, primary and secondary source documents, and even a veteran speaking to our class about his incredible war experiences. To conclude our study, students were asked to complete the statement "War is..." and articulate their new and insightful understandings of the war experience. This is their work.

War is...emotions clashing
We see the aftermath of war and think. Why? Why did we go into war? We all ask the question and we all know why. When we disagree, argue, we get to see someone at their purest form, emotion. Emotion is a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationship with others. The reason why we act, fight, breath is solely because of how we feel. We are manipulated, guided, through our emotions, and sometimes those emotions can clash with another. Wars can bring out the truest of emotions because of how close you are to death. On one side may fight for money and power, while on the other side another may fight to gain independence. On the image I chose, we see a soldier during active combat feeding a small cat with his rations. Our emotions are instinctive, we see this soldier feed this small cat because of his emotions alone. Feeding a kitty during times of war isn't what a normal soldier would do. Instead of letting a small kitty die, he feeds it, its his obligation to himself. He does this selfless act because he feels a connection to him. I believe he feels the same helplessness as the small cat. In war, soldiers experience a sense of pride when around the squadron, but a soldier standing alone feels the despair of feeling insignificant. Emotions as strong as these cause humans to act irrationaly, and accordingly to some means to fight. We see many emotions during times of war from both the enemy and the heroes.
